| Personal History | Mason Benoit was born on July 21, 1990 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Randal and Phyllis Benoit. His parents both come Cajun families, and he was raised to speak Cajun French before English. His father worked as a process operator in the oil and gas industry while his mother was an elementary school teacher. Mason’s younger sister, Sadie, was born three years after him, and the two are very close. Since he was a kid, Mason was raised to be a hardworking man. He was an exceptional student, but he never took his gifts for granted. He was also a gifted athlete and played high school football and basketball. His father’s brother was a sergeant in the Louisiana State Police, and Mason always looked up to him as a role model. He knew from a young age that he wanted a career in law enforcement, but his parents were adamant that he obtain a college degree first. Mason also had a love of the outdoors, and spent much of his youth hunting and fishing with his dad. He decided to major in Natural Resource Ecology & Management with a concentration in Forest Resource Management when he attended Louisiana State University in his native Baton Rouge. Prior to graduating, it came time to select a career choice. Mason decided to apply to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Office of Law Enforcement since he felt he could achieve his dream of being in law enforcement while enjoying the great outdoors he was so fond of. After graduation, he was accepted into the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and attended the new agent training course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. He passed his training near the top of his class, and his first assignment was to Region 6 out of the Wyoming Field Office in Cheyenne. After four years as a Federal Wildlife Officer in Cheyenne, he was transferred to Region 7 in Anchorage, Alaska where he served for another four years. He was then transferred to Region 4 in Raleigh, North Carolina where he served for two years. While he enjoyed being a Wildlife Officer, he felt that his career aspirations would not be promising if he stayed with the Fish and Wildlife service Mason fell in love with the east coast of North Carolina, and given his Federal LEO background, he applied for an open investigator position with the Williams County Sheriff's Office. He was approved for the lateral transfer provided he serve one year as a patrol deputy before assuming the investigator role. |
